The Battle of Hastings, fought in A.D. 1066, was, without question, the most important event in British history. The conquering of England by William, Duke of Normandy, changed the way the inhabitants of the Isle of Mist had lived since the Roman Armies left their shores 650 years previously in A.D. 410. Seeking the throne of England, which he believed was rightfully his, William stormed the south coast of England with an army consisting of Norman, French and Belgian forces.
The fictional side of this story revolves around a Saxon family who operated a sheep ranch in Senlac, a small yet important village about seven miles from Hastings. Bruce, a widower, raised a daughter and three sons, each one involved in the operation of the ranch. This close knit family is shattered when the invading Normans ravish their farm looking for food to feed their 10,000 man army.

A young Saxon is torn between his duty to God and hatred for the Normans that destroyed his home and family. After seeking refuge as a monk, Ayden leaves his betrothed and heads for Jerusalem with the intent of joining the ranks of the Templars, known as the Warrior Monks.

During the first century, many Christians suffered excruciating death by burning, beheading, crucifixion, or as entertainment in the Roman Coliseum. There they were forced to fight trained and experienced gladiators, or face starving wild animals. Few survived their first encounter.

During this period of time, men, whose names have survived to this day, fearlessly preached and taught the Word of God, knowing at any moment they could be arrested for blasphemy against the emperor, the self-proclaimed God of Rome.

Such a man was Polycarp. He is believed to be the elder, or bishop (episkopos) of the Christian assembly in Smyrna at the time the Apostle John wrote the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Little is known of him, however, that which is known spurs the imagination.

God’s Warriors is a story of Polycarp and Flavius, a young tribune in the Roman army whose first assignment is to squelch the riots allegedly perpetrated by Christians in Smyrna. His eventual contact with the Bishop of Smyrna changes his life to the extent that Rome places him on its list of traitors—a crime punishable by death.

From God's mouth to the hearts of His people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called The Word of God. "The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith.

1 Kings 18:36-37 - These three things that Elijah acknowledges to the Lord are vital in every believer's life-"You are God; I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your Word." For so many their confession exists of the first two, but they have to acknowledge the third with their tongue in their cheek and hope the Lord doesn't hear it. I do not exclude myself from this observation.

How important are God's words to you? Do you feast on them every day and take from them the nourishment necessary to maintain the strength you require to "to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called?" (Eph 4:1).

Milk is vital to the growth of babies, but if we are to grow in the skills of the "Word of righteousness," solid food, the Word of God, must be eaten and digested. It is not enough to quickly read the scriptures as in "my daily reading," but we must learn to meditate upon it, contemplate what it is telling us, always asking the Holy Spirit to make it clear to our understanding, then accept it, reverence it and honor it.
